In times of stress or confusion, the beauty of music can provide a much-needed balm for a weary heart. Sadly, most if not all public music performances have been canceled these past few months, a pattern that is likely to continue in the months ahead. While nothing compares to the gift of attending a live concert, through the gift of technology, we are still able to discover and enjoy and benefit from listening to music.
As the Church continues to honor Mary this month, you can draw close to the Mother of God in a special way by listening to Marian sacred music. The Blessed Mother has inspired countless composers to create stunning musical works in her honor, for it is only fitting to sing of her who sang God’s praises by a life poured out in radical receptivity to divine grace and perfect obedience to the divine will. May the beauty of Mary’s life and the beauty of this Marian music inspire in all of us a more profound spirit of receptivity and obedience to the One for whom nothing is impossible (see Luke 1:37).
