# Madre de Esperanza, Madre del Amor

“No estoy yo aquí que soy tu Madre?” Estas palabras fueron pronunciadas por Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe a un hombre indígena mexicano hace casi cinco siglos, y cambiaron el curso de la evangelización en el nuevo mundo. Los españoles ya llevaban varios años intentando convertir al nuevo mundo, pero nada funcionaba. La hostilidad entre los indígenas y los conquistadores era lo único que resultaba de los muchos intentos. En medio de este ambiente de hostilidad, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe vino al rescate de los necesitados. Ella vino a San Juan Diego y le dio todo su amor y compasión maternal.
Las apariciones de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe son un evento histórico que se ha enraizado profundamente en los corazones de la gente mexicana. Tanto que cada año, millones de personas en México aún celebran el día en que la Madre de Dios bajó del cielo a compartir el amor de Dios con los pobres, los que no tienen voz, los marginados, y los abusados. En el tiempo que yo he vivido en México y en los Estados Unidos, he sido testigo de muchas e impresionantes celebraciones en honor de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Solamente en mi pueblo natal, las festividades usualmente duran una semana e incluyen peregrinaciones y procesiones de un pueblo a otro, música, juegos pirotécnicos, y muchas celebraciones Eucarísticas. Las peregrinaciones de todas partes de México a la basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe son incontables—con un inmenso número de peregrinos no solo de México, si no del resto de América Latina, los Estados Unidos, y de alrededor del mundo entero.
¿Pero qué fue lo que hizo Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe para inspirar al pueblo mexicano a honrarla a través de los últimos cinco siglos? ¿por qué sus apariciones cambiaron el país entero, todo el mundo católico? La reina del cielo no pudo haber venido en un mejor momento a México ni con un mejor mensaje. La gente indígena mexicana estaba teniendo muchos problemas para entender la religión que los españoles les acababan de presentar. Por otra parte, los españoles también tenían muchas dificultades para explicar su fe a los indígenas. Las barreras del idioma y la ignorancia cultural y religiosa entre los españoles y los indígenas contribuían al incremento de la frustración. Cuando las cosas no podían estar peor, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe vino al rescate, sirviendo como puente y acortando las distancias con su amor maternal. Ella se le apareció a San Juan Diego y le dio la misión de ir a ver al Obispo de la ciudad de México y decirle que la Madre de Dios quería que le construyera un santuario en el lugar de las apariciones.
San Juan Diego creyó en el mensaje de Nuestra Señora por varias razones. Primero, ella mostró varios signos en su apariencia que los Aztecas asociaban con una divinidad: San Juan Diego vio la proyección de los rayos del sol detrás de Nuestra Señora, las estrellas y el color de su manto, la luna por debajo de sus pies, el color de y las figuras de su vestido, y muchos otros signos que su mera presencia mostró. Cuando San Juan Diego reconoció estos símbolos en la apariencia de Nuestra Señora, supo que ella venía del cielo y que era la Madre del único y verdadero Dios.
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe le enseñó a San Juan Diego lo mucho que Dios lo ama. Ella le demostró a él, a el Obispo, a los españoles, a los indígenas, e incluso a todos nosotros hoy en día que la manera de evangelizar a alguien es con amor y cuidado. Ella nos muestra que el camino al corazón de cualquier cultura, o de cualquier gente, es a través del amor de Dios. Como católicos, estamos llamados a llevar la Buena Nueva a los demás de la misma manera y de la misma forma que Nuestra Señora lo hizo. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe nos enseña que los seres humanos solos somos extraños cuando no nos amamos los unos a los otros, pero somos familia cuando le llevamos el amor de Dios a los demás.
