Sacred Sites of Notre Dame: Basilica of the Sacred Heart

“Papa, what’s that fancy church?”

My toddler likes to look at pictures of our wedding, especially as a stalling tactic ahead of naps and bedtime.

“That’s a very special church at Notre Dame, where Mama and Papa went to school. That’s also where Mama and Papa got married.”

“Oh. I like that special church.”

Penance & Reconciliation and the Virtue of Justice

Posted by Caitlin Sica on Feb 18, 2021 7:12:00 AM

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a 40-day pilgrimage toward the joy of the Resurrection. On this day, millions of Christians around the world will hear the words, “Remember that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return,” as they are marked with the dust of ashes. Ashes are a sign of pride—we are marked for Christ; and of humility—we are dust, we cannot save ourselves, we need a Savior. More than a dismal season marked by restricted freedoms, Lent offers us the opportunity to come home to Christ. We are given the time and space to examine the parts of our heart that remain stony, and, with the help of our Lord, turn them into flesh. We are presented with a chance to walk in solidarity with Christ as he journeys to the Cross, so that we too might die to self in order to experience new life.

Make a Scriptural Pilgrimage this Lent

“What are you discussing as you walk along?”
—Luke 24:16

During Lent a few years ago, I decided to reflect intentionally on the questions of Jesus. By that, I mean the questions that Jesus asks as recorded in the gospels. It turns out he asks a lot of questions, and not a single one of them is innocuous. What I discovered is that if we are willing to hear him, his questions will jolt us, surprise us, trouble us, and potentially even transform us. The only thing that is guaranteed to not happen if you let Jesus ask you questions is that you will remain comfortable. And so my Lenten practice turned out to be quite uncomfortable—beautifully and wonderfully uncomfortable.
